Strengths

A clear structure and examples to help you choose and explain your strengths in a tech interview, with real examples and guidance for non-native English speakers.

Introduction

When answering a question about your strengths, choose 2–3 skills that are both relevant to the role and supported by real examples.

Avoid vague or overused responses like “I’m hardworking.”

If possible, you should find your USP (unique selling point) and highlight what really sets you apart from other candidates.

Choosing Strengths

To find your USP, think about unique skills, experience or knowledge that you have...

  • Do you speak multiple languages or understand multiple markets?

  • Have you built something impressive by yourself?

  • Can you bring strong communication skills and technical expertise?

  • Have you worked in various roles that give you a unique perspective?

Example Strengths

  • I learned to code after working in marketing, so I understand both the product and the audience.

  • I’m a long-time user of the product, so I understand the user journey and where things can be improved.

  • I began my career as an early hire at a fast-paced startup, where I was thrown in at the deep end right away.

  • I have deep knowledge of the Brazilian market and user behaviour.

  • I’m a strong communicator — outside of work, I teach coding workshops to beginners.

  • I studied psychology before becoming a PM, so I bring a user-first mindset.

  • I’ve successfully managed remote teams for 5+ years, so I know how to keep people aligned and moving forwards.

Answer Structure

For each strength, you should:

  1. State the strength

  2. Give context

  3. Link it to the role

You can read the sample answer below to see this structure in practice.

Model Answer

One of my key strengths is my deep knowledge of the Brazilian market and how users engage with food delivery apps.

From my previous role as a PM at one of Brazil’s leading platforms, I gained a strong understanding of how buying patterns and support habits differ from European users.

Since you're looking to expand into Brazil, I can bring this market knowledge to the team from day one and help shape a product experience that aligns with users.

On top of this, I’m also comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.

I began my career as an early hire in a startup, where I had to learn quickly and take ownership without a lot of structure.

Not only am I experienced working in dynamic teams, but I enjoy it — and it sounds like the kind of environment you’re scaling in now.
